ReCall Service

ReCall is a service which allows subscribers to be notified by means of an SMS of people who tried to call them while they were either busy, had their phone off or where out of coverage.

ReCall works in the same way as voicemail. The only difference between them is that Voicemail requires a subscriber to dial 111 to retrieve missed calls and messages left whereas ReCall delivers the messages via SMS and does not allow any further messages to be deposited by the calling party.

The SMS contains:

* The caller ID (phone number)
* The number of times calls were attempted
* The date and time of the last call attempt
* A call back request

The exact ReCall message one gets informing them of a missed call will be:

Safaricom Apologizes to Customers Following an M-PESA service Outage

Nairobi, December 2, 2011 …Integrated telecoms operator Safaricom has apologized to its M-PESA customers following a system outage that has affected services.

The outage that started at 1305Hrs has affected all M-PESA handset transactions meaning that money transfers and other M-PESA services are not going through.

Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore said the cause of the outage is yet to be identified but the company’s engineers are working hard to ensure the system is up and services back to normal.

“We wish to apologize to our M-PESA customers due to a system outage that has affected all handset transactions. Our engineers are working hard to ensure that the hitch is fixed and services brought back to normal,” said Collymore.

He nevertheless assured M-PESA customers that there money is safe and services will resume as soon as possible.

“We regret the inconvenience this outage has caused and wish to reassure our beloved customers that their money is safe and M-PESA remains a reliable, fast and affordable means of cash transfer.

Safaricom Apologizes for M-PESA Delays, Works on Resolution

Nairobi, December 20, 2011 at 11.30 am…Telecoms operator Safaricom has apologized to its customers for intermittent delays on its M-PESA service, and said sit was working on a quick resolution.

“We wish to advise our esteemed customers and agents that they are likely to experience some delays on the M-PESA service. Consequently, they should wait for a confirmation SMS before they can issue or receive cash,” said Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore.

Added Mr Collymore: “We regret the inconvenience these delays have caused and wish to assure our customers that their money is safe. We assure them of our commitment to deliver a quality M-PESA service as our engineers work on a quick resolution.”

He thanked Safaricom customers for their patience and custom and appealed to them to use available avenues for resolution of any query. These include the 234 M-PESA Customer Care Line. The M-PESA service, the first of its kind in the world, was launched in March 2007. As at July 31, 2011, the service had over 14.4 million customers and about 30,700 agent outlets countrywide. Over 800 organizations are now accepting Bill Payment via M-PESA. The service does not require users to have a bank account; an important aspect in Kenya, where millions of people do not operate bank accounts.

With M-PESA, account holders can buy electronic funds at an M-PESA agent and send the electronic value to any other mobile phone user in the country, who can then redeem it for conventional cash at any M-PESA agent.

From the initial ‘send money home’ service, the service offering has expanded to facilitate airtime top-up, bill payment, salary disbursements, M-KESHO services and more recently international money transfer in partnership with Western Union.

M-PESA customers can hold up to KShs100,000 in their M-PESA account at any one time, and can do transactions of up to KShs140,000 in a day. Between KShs50 and KShs70,000 can be deposited, sent or withdrawn per transaction.

Why Alter Ego and Safaricom Staff?

An Alter Ego, the other ‘I’, is a second personality within a person,
who is often oblivious to the persona’s actions. A person with an alter ego is said to lead a double life. Alter egos can be applied to the role
or persona taken on by an actor or a performer. It can also refer to different behaviours any person may display in various situations. Super heroes like Avatar, Superman and James Bond are what some individuals fantasize about.

Alter Egos are not always about portraying a positive image. Some are about breaking the rules and venturing onto the dark side yet others are about exploring one’s wild side, if they have one. We all have some form of alter ego, someone we imagine to be, outside our usual characters. We dream of an alter ego that will give us an avenue of escape, a persona that will give a sense of becoming or even a sense of sameness.

In order to celebrate our individual uniqueness and togetherness as we embark on the 2.0 journey to get to know each other as people and not just Safaricom Staff, the Alter Ego Exhibition was conceptualised. This provided a platform for participants to showcase their other side and for the audience to see beyond the normal work etiquette of their peers. This interest in anything else beyond work has led staff to instill the same passion into their daily routine at Safaricom and be part of making it the best company in Africa.

A decade separates our youngest and oldest employee reinforcing the diversity showcased here and the ability to exchange ideas and grow yet maintaining our individuality. We do however have varied passions and interests away from work that motivate us, help us unwind, recharge our creative batteries and come back in to work ready to give it our best shot. These passions come through our “other side”, the side that might not come through when we are sitting at our desks, but is illuminated when our ‘hair is down’.

At Safaricom, we are fortunate enough to explore and exercise those passions within the company through our membership clubs which are made up of diverse ranges that not only enhance our musical skills, but burn our brains and awaken our muscles. These include the Safaricom Choir, Chess, Endurance and Pool Clubs.

The Safaricom Alter Ego Exhibition thus is about getting to know each other as personalities that are not only dictated by work but personalities that imbue passion and zest for activity beyond the norm. This not only brings out the best in us, but allows us to be the best we can be and ultimately achieve our corporate mission of being the best company in Africa.

M-PESA International Money Transfer?

M-PESA International Money Transfer (IMT) is an innovative way to send from abroad to someone in Kenya. The money is sent directly in to the Receiver’s Mobile phone, to the M-PESA Account, and can then be used in various ways. The money transfer is received close to instantly (time of an SMS text message). Both the Sender & Receiver are sent a confirmation SMS text message from M-PESA.
On March 31st 2011, Western Union and Safaricom announced the global expansion of their international mobile money transfer service. The service was previously offered by Western Union and Safaricom between the UK and Kenya via 12,000 Western Union Agent locations and westernunion.co.uk.

The service will allow people to send funds from more than 80,000 Western Union Agent locations in 45 countries and territories directly to Safaricom M-PESA subscribers in Kenya.

M-TICKETING

M-ticketing is the process whereby customers can order, pay for, obtain and validate tickets from any location and at any time using mobile phones or other mobile handsets.
How it works

* A subscriber will visit an MPESA Agent to purchase a Ticket, for example Hotel Stay.
* MPESA Agent may book for the subscriber or subscriber may book on their own using mobile phone. At this point, the Agent ID is inserted into the booking process for commission identification purpose. If Agent makes booking, ID is automatically recorded.
* A payment request SMS will be sent to the subscriber Mobile Phone with Booking ID and Paybill Number.
* Subscriber will make Payment via MPESA Paybill and as per SMS notification. If subscriber is not MPESA registered, agent will register subscriber promptly via normal MPESA process.
* Subscriber will receive the regular MPESA TX Receipt and provide the same to the Agent for ticketing.
* Agent will enter the MPESA TX Receipt into the Booking System against the Booking ID. System will verify and issue the ticket.
* Subscriber will receive an SMS with ticket details.
* Agent will/CAN print the Ticket and provide the same to the subscriber as hardcopy if the subscriber so wishes.
* At the point of ticket utilization, service providers will require a computer to check ticket validity. A USSD/SMS/WAP service will also be provided to check ticket validity from a mobile phone.
* On Ticket verification, subscriber is allowed to utilize ticket for the respective service purchased.
